Let me ask you a question. Would you like to have enough? Enough food to feed your family, enough house to live in, and enough money to live and give away? You can if you listen to what the Bible says about money. It says in Proverbs 3:9-10, Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest; then your barns will be completely filled, and your vats will overflow with new wine. What does it mean to honor the Lord with our possessions? As Christians, we are to give back to Jesus ten percent of what He has given us. I love how the NLT (New Living Translation) says it; it says honor the Lord with your wealth. Now I know what you may be thinking. I am not wealthy. I love how one pastor put it: “wealth is whatever you have.” So whatever you make, be it $1,000, or $2,000, or even $10,000 a month, we are to give ten percent of it to God. I want to say one thing about Christians that think it’s ok, to tithe on your paycheck after taxes have been taken out. The last part of verse 9 should clear that question up. The verse says to honor the Lord with your entire harvest or your entire paycheck. I think you should give your tithe on your whole paycheck, not part of it. Let me put it this way: do you want Jesus to bless 80% of your pay or do you want Him to bless 100% of it?
Why would we do this? It’s certainly not for God’s benefit. It’s for our benefit. I can think of two specific benefits that are met when we honor Jesus with our money. The first benefit is we will have enough. Our money doesn’t own us, which is the second benefit. I will talk about the reason our money doesn’t own us next week. The next verse says that if you honour the Lord with your money, your barns or storehouse will be filled. I believe the Bible is basically saying that if you honor the Lord with your money; Jesus will meet your needs. I love how this one pastor says it, “if your needs aren’t being met, are you tithing?” Now, do not think that if you give to Jesus, He is automatically obligated to give you everything you want. He is not. You might say you don’t know how much debt I have. I get it, that if you haven’t been tithing, it may be difficult at first. But try, see what Jesus does with the little you give Him. What if you can only give two percent of your income? I believe Jesus will still honor that if He knows you are sincere.
What does the Bible mean when it says your vats will overflow with new wine? I believe it means you will have enough possessions to give away. Another verse illustrates this too. Malachi 3:10 says, Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way, says the Lord of Armies. “See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure.” Listen to those words. Vats overflow with new wine, open the floodgates of heaven, and pour out a blessing for you without measure. Jesus wants to bless you so much, you could not even measure how much He will give you. But Jesus wants to bless His children, but He can’t start blessing us until we give back to Him.
As a Christian, what can you do to tithe to your church? You may think I should start tithing, but I don’t know if I’ll have enough. Again, even it’s two percent, I believe Jesus will honor that two percent. Now a word of warning if you are thinking about tithing. The devil will come knocking. The devil will whisper in your ear, how are you going to pay your bills if you tithe? How are you going to buy food for your family? Don’t listen to the devil. What if Jesus is waiting for you to tithe, but being worried about the outcome, you don’t start? He had a blessing waiting for you, you may have missed. Trust Jesus with the outcome and do what He says. You may wonder if you can start tithing or giving some of your income away if you are not a Christian? The answer is yes, you can start giving a bit of your money away, but the promise of Jesus meeting your needs will not be available to you until you become a Christian. You may ask yourself, how can I have that promise? You need to be saved in order for God to meet your needs. Whether you being a Christian, when you give your money to another person, church or favorite charity, you are releasing monies hold on your life.
